Adventures in Homeschooling

Tawnee says, "Do you have students that need to practice addition or multiplication? have them roll their dice and find combinations of addition or multiplication with their numbers. I love this because you can have each student work differently while playing the same game.  Or give them 5 dice of one number and 5 dice of another number and tell them to come up with a number and then roll until they have it. Math practice with fun, colorful dice.

Meg says, "I have to be totally honest, when I first broke out the Tenzi dice and we played a few rounds of standard Tenzi my husband & I both agreed that we didn’t enjoy the game. When we broke out the Tenzi Card Deck and everything changed, after each round we found ourselves saying “One more game…just one more…ok but only one more..just one more…” I wasn’t sure how my kids would feel about Tenzi since dice games aren’t their favorite, but the morning after game night found them at the table making up challenges for each other." While they say that this is recommended for ages 7-97, Little Miss at 5 years old loved this game. She called this her math class on the days that we used it, and it was! Tifany says, "We had so much fun playing a variety of the Tenzi Card Deck games...much more fun than I thought we would have. There are versions which require more concentration (focusing on particular combinations of numbers) and versions which are just great for laughs (like "Piratezi", where you must roll keeping one eye closed and you must say "Arrrg" after each roll). There are even some ideas for games which do not involve speed (although most in the deck do involve an element of speed) and some additional blank cards for writing down your own Tenzi game versions." Learning Curve

Josette says, "What we did was shuffle the deck of cards, and then played through the entire deck.   Most of the cards list fast games, but every now and then you get one that takes a little longer.   Even working through the entire deck it only took us about 45 minutes.  That 45 minutes was full of fun and laughter.  This is DEFINITELY one we're adding to the top 5 list for family game night." So when Timberdoodle asked me to review the famous dice game, Tenzi, for them, I was hesitant. I was intimidated by the piles of dice and small packaging, obviously meaning it was devoid of instructions. And I knew our family game history and the future didn’t look too bright.

Karla says, "We set the deck face down in the middle of the table and before each hand, we would flip the top card over to find out what the goal was for that hand. Our favorites are the patterns, where you roll to get the numbers shown and then arrange your dice in that specific pattern. The way we played it was whoever won the hand got to keep the card and after we had played through the deck whoever had the most cards was the winner." Read more...

1.  I packed this as one of the only games that we took across country to the dude ranch with us.
2.  At Lost Valley Ranch, the kids actually played this game with some of their new friends.
3.  When we are home and friends come to visit, this game comes off the shelf.
4.  Grown ups and kids say “yes” to playing without any of the eye rolling and self talk that comes with agreeing to play such games as Risk and Monopoly."
