OLSAT Test Prep Level A

The OLSAT test is a multiple-choice assessment that measures reasoning skills with several different verbal, non-verbal, figural, and quantitative reasoning questions. But while schools administer the OLSAT for admissions into gifted programs, it can also be used as an assessment tool to find student strengths and deficiencies.

This is why we are including OLSAT Test Prep Level A in our curriculum kits. The sample problems will teach your child how to think and tackle the many different styles of questions. OLSAT Test Prep Level A will also give you insights into your child’s ability to follow directions. Additionally, it can shed light on your child’s general knowledge and competencies.

By working through OLSAT Test Prep Level A with your child, you should find that as his critical thinking skills improve, so does his performance in other subjects.

A Seal of Approval winner by The National Parenting Center, OLSAT Test Prep Level A includes instructions, test strategy, practice tests, and enough spiraling practice questions to help your child gain mastery.

From the Publisher:
The Otis-Lennon School Ability Test® (OLSAT®), published by Pearson Education Inc., measures cognitive abilities relating to success in school. The test has several levels that correspond to different grade levels or age ranges. The test is comprised of two main sections: Verbal and Nonverbal. Each of these is further broken into specific sections that vary by level and include a mix of reasoning and thinking activities.

The OLSAT® is one of the most commonly used assessments for identifying gifted children during elementary school-age years—as an entrance test to a talented and gifted program; or as a prescriptive assessment tool to find student strengths and deficiencies. In short, the OLSAT® has the capability to answer many questions regarding your student’s abilities across both verbal and nonverbal spectrums.

Most test preparation products try to mimic sample problems provided by the test publisher. They offer smaller, cheaper practice activities—often without proper instruction of the concepts being assessed—to try to prep students for the test. This teaching-to-the-test approach leaves students vulnerable to variations of problems that they are likely to encounter in a test.

The authors of this book analyzed the thinking skills and academic concepts targeted in the OLSAT® Level A to create a powerful test prep product that teaches beyond the test. It also improves students’ critical thinking skills so they also perform better in school.

Our test preparation approach is to provide students:
  • Instructions on targeted test skills
  • Important test scoring strategy
  • Four Practice Tests--enough spiraling practice questions to help students feel confident in the skills being tested.

    Mind stretching

This book used alone, or as test prep, will stretch the brain. I found it especially helpful when she did another assessment that challenged her in similar ways.

    A Surprising Gem!

I used this book for my daughter 2 years ago and I'm repurchasing for my son to use this year! A great way to get them used to that standardized testing format in a state where we're required to test yearly. My daughter called it her "bubble book" and loved when we'd do our 2-3 pages once a week.

The book was a fun and easy way to practice reasoning. My daughter didnt find the questions to be too difficult and she liked the book.

Quick and Easy way to start test prep

I do 2 questions a couple times a week with my 5YO. This is a very simple way to start preparing him for test taking. I have older kids so I know how important it is to start early just to get them comfortable with the format of test taking. My 5YO enjoys this time together and it takes maybe 3 minutes. I read the question aloud ONE TIME, then he points to the answer he thinks is best. This has been a great insight for us, and a good learning opportunity- I am starting to see how his brain works.

    Depends on your schooling style

This is a good test prep book. If that is the route you are going for your home schooling then this is perfect. If you are more child led learning or learn through play, I don't really think this book is necessary. Yes there are some great critical thinking problems, but there are other activities and games we do that get my child thinking the same way. This really is a personal preference item.
