Timberdoodle's Review

First Language Lessons Level 2

If your approach to language arts is a blend of classical education with a pinch of Charlotte Mason’s ideas, you will be quite pleased with First Language Lessons

With two to three short lessons a week, First Language Lessons Level 2 covers a full range of grammar topics, including parts of speech, punctuation, and the prewriting skills of narrating and storytelling.

It requires very little teacher prep; just open the instruction manual, read the script, and follow directions to teach the concepts. There is no student workbook for this level since plain or lined paper is adequate until diagramming is introduced in Level 3

First Language Lessons Level 2’s spiral learning ensures mastery for every child, which is essential for this foundational year of language study.

From the Publisher:
A complete grammar text for young students, First Language Lessons Level 2 follows Level 1 and uses dictation, narration, picture study, and other classical techniques to develop language ability. This one teacher book is all you need--no workbook! Students write the copywork and dictation on the lined paper they prefer. From nouns and verbs to punctuation and capitalization, these easy-to-use, scripted lessons will give your child a solid foundation in grammar and clear communication.

Excellent follow-up to FLL 1

One of the things I love about FLL is that you can use them synchronously, but you can also jump right into whichever level is appropriate for your child's age. Skills learned in level 1 are repeated in level 2, but in fewer lessons and with less repetition before moving on to new material. Two types of students particularly benefit from this: Kids who may not have fully internalized some things in level 1, but don't need a full repeat of the material, and slightly older students who haven't studied grammar previously. The review for one student is an adequate introduction for another, without making things too babyish or redundant for either.

First Language Lessons Level 2

We started this in first grade when my son was still 5, he's advanced in reading and I wasn't sure where to start him in language arts. This turned out to be a great fit. It's very easy to use with no prep. The lessons are very short, they usually take us 10 minutes. The method works great and my son is definitely learning the material well. However I will say that I'm considering trying something else next time just to see if I can find something a little more exciting. My son actually seems to really enjoy learning grammar, and he enjoys this book for the most part but sometimes the memorizing gets a little old. But I know it's a great way to learn so I may still just stick with this one.

Level 2

This builds on the concepts of the first one. If you didn't use the first level don't worry. It is not so complex that your child will be lost. It is set up with reviews and new concepts.

First Language Lessons Level 2

Same with the First Grade one, I just don't enjoy using these books....

First Language Lessons Level 2

It is very repetitive and follows right in line with what we do in Classical Conversations.
