Exploring Creation with Botany Notebooking Journal

for use with Exploring Creation with Botany.

The Young Explorer Series is a favorite science program for young scientists and with good reason. The Charlotte Mason approach provides lots of information in a readable, engaging format. Lessons are designed to be spread over multiple weeks, with significant portions devoted to hands-on experiments and notebook keeping.

Notebook Keeping Explained

Notebook keeping is simply a system for assisting your child in documenting what he has learned in each lesson. With this book, your child will write out the highlights of the lesson. If your child is young or doesn't enjoy writing, you can instead use the Junior version of the Notebooking Journal, available separately.

This approach helps your child think through what he has learned, distill it down to its most basic level, and communicate it effectively. If he can't reiterate it well, he probably doesn't grasp it.

The spiral-bound Botany Notebooking Journal includes:

  • A daily Schedule for completing the readings, notebook assignments, activities, and experiments utilizing a two-day-per-week plan.
  • Fascinating Facts Templates for your student to record what he has learned with words and illustrations for each lesson.
  • Templates for completing the Notebooking Activities.
  • Review Questions for each lesson, which can be answered orally or as a written narration.
  • Scripture Copywork, with both print and cursive practice--a valuable method for memorizing Scripture; teaching spelling, grammar, and writing; and handwriting practice.
  • Project Pages and Scientific Speculation Sheets for the student to record experiments or projects completed throughout the course.
  • Dig in Deeper ideas for each lesson, including additional activities, projects, experiments, books, or videos that correlate with the lesson.
  • Beautiful, full-color, lapbook-style Miniature Books, which the student may wish to create, encouraging him to record facts and information learned in each lesson. These are then placed on the Miniature Book Paste Page to display in his notebook.
  • Field Trip Sheets to keep a record of botany field trips he enjoyed during his studies.
  • A Final Review with fifty questions the student can answer, either orally or in writing, to show off what he knows about botany at the end of the course.

    Consider "Junior" version

We got this notebook as part of the 2nd grade core curriculum. Although this is a great book and we are fans of the Apologia Exploring Creation series, we found it was difficult and a lot of work for our 2nd grader. I just found out there is a "Junior" version of their notebooks for K-3rd that may be more appropriate.

Perfect for none writers and writers alike

The Botany Notebooking Journal made it super easy to teach my three kids - a three different levels) at once. The older kids could write in the answers in the space given while the younger could diagram around the beautiful charts and pictures given. It was a nice change for the kids to have instead of just writing in an ordinary notebook. Anything that makes my life easier gets a stamp of approval and this is one of them.

This really adds a lot to the curriculum!

We love the Botany Notebooking Journal! It was definitely worth the price for us. It is full of beautifully decorated pages with places for my children to write information and boxes to sketch drawings in. This makes it very motivating to them. It also has full-color mini-book cutouts of various things that they love to make and glue in their notebooks. There are pages with extra tips, projects, library book suggestions, crossword puzzles, review questions, and more. Best of all, there are scripture copywork pages all throughout. What I like about the Apologia Botany Notebooking Journal is that I can easily adjust them to each child (as I have several ages going through the course at the same time). My oldest does just about every page, the crossword puzzles, extra projects and questions. My younger ones do less. They are really enjoying it and prefer it to lapbooking. I highly recommend getting this supplement to go along with the Exploring Creation with Botany textbook.
