About All About Spelling Level 4

You know that kids learn in a variety of ways. So a multisensory approach, like All About Spelling (AAS), can be very successful. But children also differ in their motivational approach to learning.

You may have a curious child who really wants to understand the ins and outs of spelling, while his sibling just doesn't care. Suppose you have a child who thrives on spelling rules and is most comfortable understanding the reasoning behind each word's spelling. In that case, he will adore AAS because a single new rule or concept is taught in each spelling lesson. The award-winning AAS provides complete and comprehensive instruction using the multisensory Orton-Gillingham explicit teaching approach.

Students should complete All About Spelling Levels 1 through 3 before starting Level 4. Because All About Spelling is mastery-based, the level numbers do not correspond to grade levels.

AAS is a building-block program where each level builds on the skills taught in the previous levels. AAS teaches how words are spelled and why they are spelled that way. For example, why is "cat" spelled with a "c" rather than a "k"? This is a concept students can later apply to spell words such as "emergency" and "concentrate."

To prevent gaps in knowledge, most students will start with Level 1. However, older students may be able to work through the levels relatively quickly. If you feel like your student is ready to begin at a higher level, you can look through the scope and sequence PDFs to see which concepts he would be missing by skipping levels. If you have any questions about this, please contact us, and we'll be happy to help!

In Level 4, your student will continue to learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, and multisensory strategies for spelling. He will also learn exciting new concepts, including 12 new phonograms, prefixes, strategies for multi-syllable words, abbreviations, and words with unaccented A.

Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 4. Below is a sampling in each area:

Encoding

  • Learn phonograms TCH, DGE, EW, EI, WR, KN, OR, EIGH, EAR, PH, TI, and OE
  • Spell words with prefixes, such as unhappy
  • Spell words with the different sounds of Y, such as yellow, myth, shy, and candy
  • Spell words with the fourth sound of O, such as second
  • Spell words containing unaccented A, such as about and above
  • Spell words with the sound of /shun/ spelled TION, such as question

Phonological Awareness

  • Learn strategies for spelling the sounds of /j/ and /ch/
  • Learn how to add prefixes
  • Categorize the four sounds of the letter Y
  • Apply spelling strategies to multi-syllable words
  • Analyze the five ways to spell the sound of /er/
  • Learn to spell standard abbreviations

Our favorite Spelling Curriculum

We've tried SO many spelling curriculums and this is by far our favorite! We love that it is quick (10 minutes a day max). We also love the dication sentences provided and that it is rooted in phonics. It works so well for all of my kids.

Another great level

We like All About Spelling in general because it’s a great way to learn the tools of spelling and not just memorizing. We like level 4 just as much as the other levels. My favorite part of the lessons are when there’s 5 words that my student has to spell and then make up sentences with them. I think it is really good practice on how to form complete thoughts on paper.

AAS Level 4

This is another great level from AAS. I love how this program isn’t just spelling memorization. In the previous levels, I didn’t have my son using the tiles when spelling. He seemed to do well enough without them but for level 4 I’ve added the tiles back in and it has made this level click so much more for him. I love how this program works for all learning styles and as a parent you can adapt it to your child in that moment. This is by far my favorite spelling program offered by Timberdoodle.

Best spelling program

We have loved using the All About Spelling program! I love how my kinesthetic learner, my visual learner, and my auditory learner can all succeed in each lesson because it is presented in so many ways. I am sad that we only have one year left with All About Spelling.

Excellent spelling program

This program works very well for us. It teaches why words are spelled the way they are, without making you memorize a ton of exceptions to a very few spelling rules. It's easy to use and to teach, with no prep time required, and is not overly time-consuming.
