The Story of the World Volume 1: Ancient Times

The Story of the World Volume 1 covers Ancient Times. This is the first of a four-volume series and covers the major historical events beginning with the earliest nomads and ending with the last Roman emperor (5000 BC to 400 AD). What terrible secret was buried in Shi Huangdi's tomb? Did nomads like lizard stew? What happened to Anansi the Spider in the Village of the Plantains? And how did a six-year-old become the last emperor of Rome? A read-aloud history for the whole family!

The Curriculum/Activity Guide offers parents and teachers a complete history curriculum for use with The Story of the World. In addition to extensive reading lists and cross-references to the most common illustrated encyclopedias, the Activity Book contains comprehension questions, sample narrations, maps, coloring pages, and activities for each chapter in The Story of the World. Children and parent-teachers love the activities, ranging from coloring pages and games to mummifying a chicken!

The Story of the World Volume 1 Audio Book is unabridged for listening to on long car trips, while working around the house, or just for added convenience on any school day! This spirited reading of The Story of the World Volume 1 brings to life the stories and records of the people of Ancient Times. • About the Story of the World Series:

This captivating read-aloud series will introduce your children to the world's great history presented chronologically from the beginning of time. Each volume of The Story of the World includes the details of battles, kingdoms, cultures, and customs from every continent and major people group. It is woven together into stories that children will find mesmerizing. With short chapters, many less than seven pages, The Story of the World presents history in small, easily-digestible chunks. Of particular appeal to children will be the occasional story about a hypothetical child in the culture of that time and popular fictional stories.

The Story of the World is intended to be a read-aloud program for first through sixth grade, but it can work equally well as independent reading by an older child. Don't restrict your scope of history to just American history. These are what we consider the best world history books for this age group. If you have ever found history dull and humdrum, these books might just change that opinion!

Note: Please do not consider this series a Providential view of history that recognizes God's hand in history. It is first and foremost a history text that attempts to include all significant historical and cultural accounts. If you are a conservative Christian, you may want to opt-out of a couple of activities. And where you find details with Biblical references that are inaccurate because of sparseness, use this opportunity to interject more of His Story. Bible history is best taught with a Bible, so we encourage your family to read through the Bible as often as possible. These minor issues are easily addressed and shouldn't keep you from this overall excellent program.

    This is religious material.

I bought the story of the world bundle because it was not religious. However, it talks about Jesus resurrection and also has a prayer within the book.

    Michaela,

We understand your initial concern regarding religious content in the history program. However, you may be relieved to know that while The Story of the World does include stories about various religions—such as those of the Jews, Egyptians, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, and more—the author’s goal is to inform about the religions that influenced each period, without promoting any one belief system. Religion is an essential part of studying history because of its significant role in shaping societies, cultures, laws, and historical events throughout time.
I hope this explanation helps clarify things!

    Perfect For Our Elementary Kids

We have thoroughly been enjoying this curriculum. We received this in the 1st grade package, but our pre-k student also listens along and does the activities. At first glance, it looks really boring, but with a little preparation the history comes to life with the additional resources, enrichment reading recommendations, and projects. The chapters are appropriately short, the workbook has a lot of coloring pages, map work, word searches etc., and those are easy to let your child independently work on, but some of the projects are so fun! Who knew you could mummify your own chicken to tie into Ancient Egypt teachings?! Our kids love history class, and as someone who didn't like taking history growing up, I have also found a new love for it. This does take some prep work on the parent side (20 minutes depending on activities, and some trips to the library) if you really want to take advantage of this program, but it has been totally worth it.

    Excellent curriculum and read-aloud!

We absolutely love The Story of the World, vol. 1! Ancient History might seem like a stretch for young students, but they are endlessly fascinated by it! My kids find it a fascinating read-aloud, there are activities for a variety of ages and interests, and as a bit of a history nerd, I really appreciate how the author recognizes her own inherent bias, but does her best to give as fair and neutral voice to different perspectives as humanly possible.

    Not for 1st grade

As a teacher, I do admire this curriculum's rigor, activities, and supplemental book lists. However, I deeply question using this curriculum in first or second grade for non-history fanatic children. Why? Well, my kid is sensitive and cannot read about mummies or death without breaking down and having night terrors. Also the curriculum is too rigorous for first and second graders who are just trying to master writing, reading, and basic math. My kid excels in reading, but struggles in the other two so we have to do a lot of supplemental curriculum and activities. We just do not have time for a rigorous history curriculum with so many lessons a week. When you add in extra reading books or projects, it takes more time than you think. I was intimidated and overwhelmed just looking at one week of lessons and thinking about how many books I would need to get at the library. Sure, I will do this curriculum with my son - just in 3rd grade instead. In the meantime, I am doing timelines based on Bede's History of Me and Us for social studies and reading some books on historical figures and holidays that I have on the shelf already and are easily accessible. So its a good curriculum, just not for us in first grade.
