Math-U-See Primer is a good fit for most kindergarten students; to find the Math-U-See level that best fits your child you try the placement test here.

Math-U-See Primer

Math-U-See Primer is a gentle introduction to math. This year the emphasis will be less on mastery of concepts and skills and more on becoming familiar with them. Your student will learn how to write numerals and do basic counting. He will be introduced to addition and subtraction, skip counting, geometric shapes, and telling time.

Every Math-U-See Primer set also includes a Digital Pack. Accessible through any internet browser, you will have streaming video versions of Math-U-See's Instructional DVD, a PDF of the Instruction Manual, access to an online version of their Digital Manipulatives, and convenient links to a number of their free online resources.

The Primer Digital Pack also includes Skip Count Songs mp3s. Lifetime access to all of these resources is included free with the purchase of the Math-U-See Primer Curriculum set.

About Math-U-See Curriculum

For more than 20 years, Math-U-See's renowned mastery-based, multi-sensory, student-paced program has been the answer for countless families.

Math-U-See is a comprehensive K-12 math curriculum that uses manipulatives to illustrate and teach the concepts. If you regularly experience tears from your child whenever new mathematical topics are introduced, you need Math-U-See's systematic, precept-upon-precept math program.

This manipulative-based curriculum ensures your children will be able to fully understand each mathematical concept before moving on to another one.

Math-U-See is mastery-oriented, clear, to the point, and compelling with simple, uncluttered pages. In Math-U-See, new ideas are introduced step by step logically. At the same time, concepts that have been mastered are reviewed periodically.

The lessons are short, and there are many opportunities for multi-sensory experiences using videos and manipulatives.

Math-U-See books are organized into levels, not grades, so students can proceed at their own pace as they master concepts. This is particularly helpful for the child that is not performing at grade level but would rather not have that be a daily reminder.

Student workbooks are softcover, and the pages are perforated and punched so they can be removed, completed, and placed in binders if you choose.

Occasional fun exercises, like dot-to-dots and crossword puzzles, have been incorporated into the student workbooks. Student workbook pages are consumable, so each child will need their own copy.

Instruction manuals for most MUS levels include complete answer keys with solutions for all problems. However, the Primer Instruction Manual includes answers for some, but not all, of the problems in each lesson. The answer keys are more a necessity at the upper levels than the lower ones.

The Math-U-See Manipulatives are more than a supplement. They are an integral part of the curriculum. Used from the Primer through Algebra 1 levels, the manipulatives build each concept from place value through polynomials through Integer Blocks, Fraction Overlays, and Algebra/Decimal Inserts.

Math-U-See does require a fair amount of parental involvement, especially in the younger grades. They have bent over backwards to make the lesson planning as painless as possible. But to get the most out of Math-U-See, parents should be prepared to plan and not start the lessons unprepared.

Math-U-See's teacher guide and supplemental DVD will teach you, the parent, more than just how to solve a math problem. They also show why the problem is solved in this manner and when to apply the concept.

Each lesson is demonstrated on the DVDs with such kind-hearted enthusiasm. I now understand why children line up at homeschool conferences to give the instructor, Steve Demme, a hug. DVDs can be played on a DVD player or computer; however, Windows 10 users will need to download a separate video player.

Math-U-See is laid out with step-by-step procedures for introducing, practicing, mastering, and reviewing concepts. How do you know when your child has 'mastered' a math concept? Not just when he gets the answers right but when he can teach the concept back to you, especially if he can do so with a word problem.

Math-U-See will show you how. So, if you want to give your child a rock-solid mathematical foundation, if your child is shaky on the basics, or just looking for a no-frills, common-sense program, you will be pleased with Math-U-See.

Note: Math-U-See manipulative comes in a standard cardboard box with a lightweight plastic tray. These do not hold up well, either in shipment or daily life, so we'd suggest considering a different long-term storage option, such as a bin or bag. Our crew always does their best, but unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that the packaging will arrive in good condition.

How Do I Choose Which Curriculum Set I Need?
    Primer Universal Set
The Math-U-See Primer Universal Set includes everything a new customer needs to be successful with Math-U-See Primer. The Instruction Pack, Student Pack, Integer Block Kit, and the Primer Digital Pack are conveniently bundled so customers can be certain they have all of the items they need.

    Primer Level Up Set
The Primer Level Up Set is geared toward families who already own the Integer Block Kit, or who are purchasing the Integer Block Kit as part of another Math-U-See level. If you are looking for a complete set, minus the massive manipulative set, this is what you want. In addition to the Instruction Pack and Student Pack, the Primer Level Up Set also includes the Primer Digital Pack with access to streaming instruction videos, instructional PDFs, and all the other online resources for the Primer level in one convenient location.

    Primer Student Workbook
This is the right choice for families who have more than one student in the Primer level and who need a second workbook, or for families who have previously used Primer for one student and already own both the Integer Block Kit and the Instruction Pack. The Primer Digital pack is not included.

You must have the Instruction Pack to utilize Math-U-See effectively. If you do not already own the Instruction Pack, you should purchase the Universal Set or Level Up set, not the Student Workbook.

From the Manufacturer: Math-U-See focuses on Building Understanding. What began as a simple, effective way to show students “why” math works has grown into an award-winning K-12 program, products focused on specific intervention strategies, and a classroom system that can be used alongside any existing curriculum.

The parents’ guide was hit or miss depending on the lesson as far as how much guidance is given. My son loved the activities, which were great for holding the attention of a 5-year-old boy who struggles with focus.

    Kid (and Parent) Approved!

This is our second round utilizing Math-You-See Primer. The manipulatives are fantastic for a hands-on experience. We utilize the videos when introducing each lesson -- I think my kids enjoy listening to a different instructor for a change! The worksheets are great to reinforce the concepts throughout the week.

    My child loves it!!

My daughter is young so I was afraid the colorless pages would not be enough to keep her attention but it sparked her imagination! She calls it treasure math and keeps her blocks in a treasure chest that she had! She creates stories about building castles and begs to “play” several times a day!
