Typing Instructor Gold for Kids - Mac Version

Do you remember the fable from India in which the blind men took turns investigating an elephant's shape? One felt the tusk and thought an elephant was like a spear, while another felt the trunk and thought an elephant was like a snake. I was reminded of this fable when I asked employees to review Typing Instructor for Kids Gold.

One saw the program as troublesome because of the occasional references to luck and the sporadic glimpses of skeletons. Plus, children are asked to consult a talking stone if they need additional typing instruction.

However, the other reviewer saw it as an exciting, motivating method of teaching young children how to touch-type.

The interactive fiction typing game, Typing Instructor for Kids Gold, offers thirty-plus action-packed, multi-level game challenges; graduated drills and lesson plans; hundreds of activities, exercises, and tests; and bilingual learning in English and Spanish.

Children will master the keyboard using proven typing techniques while journeying with Toby and Lafitte to five imaginative lands. There they will learn proper typing techniques and build keyboarding skills.

Just choose a typing plan, set a words-per-minute goal (this can be adjusted at any time), and as your child explores Typer Island, he will learn to type along the way.

The engaging lessons and exercises teach children essential typing skills, including speed and accuracy. Do your children find your current typing program boring? Are you looking for a typing program with the right balance of education, entertainment, and motivation? Then consider the award-winning Typing Instructor for Kids Gold.

Adventurer Tools
Typer Island has a lot of Adventurer tools for kids to find their way around the Island. Aboard the Tour Ship kids can learn everything about Typer Island! A convenient Map Room helps kids to see where they are on their adventure, where they are going next, and what keys they will learn. The Treasure Chest shows what new coins and points they have earned. Kids can display a variety of graphs in the Saved Results area to see their performance on all their typing activities; lessons, challenges, stories and even games. They can see their progress and the keys on the keyboard they need to practice.

From the Publisher:
Typing Instructor for Kids Gold is the most advanced Typing Program available. It presents Typing Instructor in full-screen size and rich color for the optimum Typing Instructor experience for kids. No other Typing tutorial is more entertaining and educational.

Get your kids to the head of the class as they learn to become Touch Typists on a motivating adventure on Typer Island. Kids start their journey in the Old West at Wild Bill’s Soda Shoppe. They’ll learn to conquer the a, s, l, and ; keys, take on typing lessons, challenges, and games. The Typer Island Adventure is packed with so much fun and motivation, kids forget they are learning to type. “Boring” is not a word you’ll hear as kids continue their Adventure in new lands, On the Water, In the Air, Over the Edge, and Under the Sea. Typing Instructor for Kids is the perfect typing solution for parents, too, as kids will not need help as they are guided step-by-step by Toby, a young boy, and his feathered-sidekick, Layfette. They help kids progress through the Adventure using just the keys they have learned.

Packed with Motivation
Kids are motivated to learn new keys, pass typing tests and complete challenges to earn coins, points, and jewels for their Treasure Chest. After completing typing activities in each land, the ultimate reward is reaching the Castle. Once at the Castle, kids become the ruler of Typer Island and embark on more adventures and games. The Castle’s secret passageway takes them to the Lost City, a mysterious underwater city, filled with surprises and a challenging underwater scavenger hunt game.

Explorer Isle Cave
Kids can take a break from their typing adventure at any time to explore Typer Island. The Cave on Explorer Isle has an awesome game room where kids can choose to play any of Typer Island’s games – except the exciting bonus games available in the Castle and the Lost City. They must reach the Castle to play those games. Kids can choose to take more lessons or challenges on Explorer Isle. They can also visit Story Lagoon and practice their skills by typing a favorite story from literature, such as excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a nursery rhyme, a classic book, or a fairy tale.

    Simple and Easy!

My third grader was able to just pop this in and go! Not intimidating at all and very motivating!

    Lessons move too fast

It’s really a mission to get this loaded onto a Mac (I don’t know why its in CD format when everything has moved online now) and the concept is great but the lessons just move way to fast. Before you have mastered the selected letters you already move onto the next lesson which includes even more letters, resulting in a very stressed and freaked out student as you cannot go back and redo previous lessons. A good concept but they should allow you the option to stay on a lesson until it is mastered. My daughter was in tears after the first 4 lessons and doesn’t want to continue.

Thank you for taking the time to share your daughter's experience with Typing Instructor! I reached out to Individual Software to see if they had some insight for your student and here is their response which I hope will help your student:
    'From: Support Team:
While in an assigned typing plan, a typist cannot move forward to the next activity after completing a lesson or test without matching or exceeding their Goal WPM with an accuracy of 90% or higher. Increasing the Goal WPM in the Settings area is good to do if the typist is completing lessons too quickly.

Also, from the Main Island, the typist can click on the Explorer Isle icon where they can practice any typing lesson, challenge or test. For any typist who wants to put in more work with any area, this would be the perfect place to go.'

    The 90’s called...

This software is too ancient for this generation lol. Sorry to say but my kids couldn’t get passed the terrible animation and boringness. It’s been in a drawer after 2 tries...

    ok...

It's a good game, but after awhile it gets boring. This is probably best for younger children. J.B. age 12

Mac Typer Instructor for kids Gold

It is a great fit for my 10 year old. I feel like it is a little too hard for my just 6 year old. However, she is eager to learn and, therefore, continues to try. She does find it discouraging when she has to do the lesson repeatedly to get to the game. I’m most disappointed in how discouraged my 8 year old is by the program. He is a perfectionist and has become very put off by having to repeat the lessons.
