Timberdoodle's Review

First Language Lessons Level 1

If your approach to language arts is a blend of classical education with a pinch of Charlotte Mason’s ideas, you will be quite pleased with First Language Lessons

With two to three short lessons a week, First Language Lessons Level 1 covers a full range of grammar topics, including parts of speech, punctuation, and the prewriting skills of narrating and storytelling.

It requires very little teacher prep; just open the instruction manual, read the script, and follow directions to teach the concepts. There is no student workbook for this level since plain or lined paper is adequate until diagramming is introduced in Level 3First Language Lessons Level 1’s spiral learning ensures mastery for every child, which is essential for this foundational year of language study.

Tried and True

This is a deceptively simple curriculum. It may look a little plain Jane, boring even, but don't be fooled! This gently and patiently lays a solid foundation in English language skills for young students without over complicating the lessons or instruction, or by asking too much too soon. It capitalizes on young students inclination toward repetition and memorization, providing just enough challenge to be interesting but not too much to loose them. 7 years in and this is still my go-to grammar primer!

Repetitive on Grammar, but the poetry is lovely!

My kids can still recite "A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea." complete with eye roll for the level of repetitiveness of the grammar. We really enjoyed the poetry and some of the grammar, but we struggled with doing nouns for most of this whole book. Still it was an excellent 1-2 grade resource!

Great

Started this book mid-year for my 1st grader. She has really enjoyed it so far (even my 4.5 year old wants to tag along). The lessons are short and simple. It's a great open and go book option without any extra material.

Didn't love this

We didn't love this book. I liked the emphasis on literature and poetry, but it's not my favorite way to learn grammar points. For that, I find a workbook with practice problems to be more effective and efficient. My daughter abhorred the repetitive focus on nouns (she scratched out the word "noun" in workbooks for years after this book :-)), and overall, was beyond happy to be beyond it and onto something else. Maybe it works for kids who like this approach; my child is just not one of them. Thankfully, there are a lot of approaches to grammar and English out there!

Level 1

We are loving this book. The lessons are short. It's great for a classical learner. I didn't realize before that my girls love memorizing poems. It's very repetitive, but my 8 & 6 year old enjoy the daily repetition and memorization.
