About All About Spelling Level 7

You know that kids learn in a variety of ways. So a multisensory approach, like All About Spelling (AAS), can be very successful. But children also differ in their motivational approach to learning.

You may have a curious child who really wants to understand the ins and outs of spelling, while his sibling just doesn't care. Suppose you have a child who thrives on spelling rules and is most comfortable understanding the reasoning behind each word's spelling. In that case, he will adore AAS because a single new rule or concept is taught in each spelling lesson. The award-winning AAS provides complete and comprehensive instruction using the multisensory Orton-Gillingham explicit teaching approach.

Students should complete All About Spelling Levels 1 through 6 before starting Level 7. Because All About Spelling is mastery-based, the level numbers do not correspond to grade levels.

AAS is a building-block program where each level builds on the skills taught in the previous levels. AAS teaches how words are spelled and why they are spelled that way. For example, why is "cat" spelled with a "c" rather than a "k"? This is a concept students can later apply to spell words such as "emergency" and "concentrate."

To prevent gaps in knowledge, most students will start with Level 1. However, older students may be able to work through the levels relatively quickly. If you feel like your student is ready to begin at a higher level, you can look through the scope and sequence PDFs to see which concepts he would be missing by skipping levels. If you have any questions about this, please contact us, and we'll be happy to help!

In Level 7, your student will learn encoding skills, reliable spelling rules, multisensory spelling strategies, and exciting new concepts, including words with Latin roots, Greek word parts, and influences from French, Spanish, and Italian languages. Spelling strategies for lifelong learning are also covered.

Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 7. Below is a sampling in each area:

Encoding

  • Spell words with the e-consonant-e pattern, such as extreme
  • Spell words containing Latin roots
  • Spell plural Latin words
  • Spell words containing Greek word parts
  • Spell French words
  • Spell Spanish loanwords
  • Spell Italian loanwords
  • Spell words ending in IBLE and ABLE, such as flexible and available

Phonological Awareness

  • Learn clues for spelling words with suffix ANCE and suffix ENCE
  • Learn spelling strategies for lifelong learning

    Great program

We've used all the AAS books now, and it's been a great program - very effective! I like how simple the teacher's guides are. They don't require preparation, and are easy to teach from. The review is built-in, and there's not any busy work - only what's needed. The program teaches the reasons behind the spelling, although in this book, there are more words than usual to memorize as exceptions, since it's the final book and also includes foreign words that are in general English usage. At the end of the book, they emphasize continuing learning new words that you encounter elsewhere, progressing from easier ones in more common usage to harder, less frequently encountered ones. Overall, an excellent program! In the earlier years, we used letter magnet tiles from a classroom-size box to do the spelling, since writing was more difficult than spelling for my daughter, but then progressed to just writing out the words, as the little magnetized squares had a definite tendency to fall off the board when bumped, which got too annoying by the end of the first lesson in the first book. We kept them bagged up and ignored after that. :-)
