About All About Spelling
You know that kids learn in a variety of ways. That is why a multisensory approach, like All About Spelling (AAS), is so successful. But children also differ in their motivational approach to learning. You may have an inquisitive child who really wants to understand the ins and outs of spelling, while his sibling just doesn’t care. If you have a child who thrives on spelling rules and who is most comfortable understanding the reasoning behind each word’s spelling he will adore AAS, because in each spelling lesson, a single new rule or concept is taught. The award-winning AAS provides complete and comprehensive instruction using the multisensory Orton-Gillingham explicit teaching approach.

About All About Spelling Level 3

You know that kids learn in a variety of ways. So a multisensory approach, like All About Spelling (AAS), can be very successful. But children also differ in their motivational approach to learning.

You may have a curious child who really wants to understand the ins and outs of spelling, while his sibling just doesn't care. Suppose you have a child who thrives on spelling rules and is most comfortable understanding the reasoning behind each word's spelling. In that case, he will adore AAS because a single new rule or concept is taught in each spelling lesson. The award-winning AAS provides complete and comprehensive instruction using the multisensory Orton-Gillingham explicit teaching approach.

Students should complete All About Spelling Levels 1 and 2 before starting Level 3. Because All About Spelling is mastery-based, the level numbers do not correspond to grade levels.

AAS is a building-block program where each level builds on the skills taught in the previous levels. AAS teaches how words are spelled and why they are spelled that way. For example, why is "cat" spelled with a "c" rather than a "k"? This is a concept students can later apply to spell words such as "emergency" and "concentrate."

To prevent gaps in knowledge, most students will start with Level 1. However, older students may be able to work through the levels relatively quickly. If you feel like your student is ready to begin at a higher level, you can look through the scope and sequence PDFs to see which concepts he would be missing by skipping levels. If you have any questions about this, please contact us, and we'll be happy to help!

In Level 3, your student will continue to learn:

  • Encoding skills
  • Reliable spelling rules
  • Multisensory strategies for spelling
  • 10 new phonograms
  • The jobs of Silent E
  • Words with C+l-e syllables and much more

Phonological awareness and encoding skills are taught throughout Level 3. Below is a sampling in each area:

Encoding

  • Learn phonograms AI, AY, UR, OA, OO, EA, ED, IGH, IR, and EY
  • Spell words with C+l-e syllables, such as table
  • Spell words with double consonants, such as puzzle
  • Spell words with the ending sound of /e/ spelled y, such as happy
  • Spell words with consonant suffixes and vowel suffixes, such as thankful and loudest
  • Spell common contractions, such as can't
  • Spell common pairs of homophones, such as dear and deer

Phonological Awareness

  • Analyze ways to spell long vowel sounds
  • Categorize the jobs of Silent E
  • Identify C+l-e syllable types
  • Learn about homophones
  • Learn about past tense
  • Learn about consonant suffixes and vowel suffixes

All About Spelling Level 3 Scope and Sequence.

    Great spelling curriculum

I can’t believe how well my son can spell! I really love how the curriculum is broken down by spelling rules rather than just memorizing lists of words like I did growing up.

We use the full sentences at the end of the lessons instead of just single words for his “tests.” I prerecord the sentences in a PowerPoint so he can work independently while I work with my other child. I love that he can work on spelling and handwriting at the same time and he loves being able to work at his own pace independently.

    Love All About Spelling!

We've been using All About Spelling since the beginning and we love it! My daughter looks forward to it as an easy subject because it feels like review for her since she first learned the concepts the year before in the AAR. The lessons are straight forward and easy to understand and it's very open and go for me as the parent!

    Love this program

My son is on level 3, and he and I absolutely love this program. It is super detailed, and very easy to understand and explain. It is filled with colorful, fun pages, and has a progress chart with stickers that gets kids excited to want to finish each lesson. I would highly recommend this program.

    LOVE AAS

I really love the AAS program!! I like that it works with the All About Reading program and has similar setup! I appreciate the way they teach the rules and about rule breakers! I can watch the understanding click on in their brains as you go through the lessons and review past lessons!

    Amazing program

Been using AAS (and Reading) for 3 years now. We're currently up to the mid-way point in level 4 spelling. Super easy to teach, open and go lessons with little prep work on my part. The kids have thrived using it and I love that you just go at whatever pace is needed for each individual child. Highly recommend and we will continue using the spelling until the bitter end! I will say that with my oldest I was using both All About Spelling and Reading simultaneously and I found that to be too much together. The systems are so similar that 15-20 minutes of each thing was repetitive/ boring. Finally figured out that it worked better, for us, to focus on formal reading lessons and wait to start spelling later. We stopped formal reading lessons after level 2 and have mainly done spelling since then. Much of the same content is covered across the 2 courses. We've always used the physical tiles, but now that my kids have tablets and are older we will switch to the app next year and they're really excited to try that!
