Level 4:

In All About Reading Level 4, your student will combine knowledge acquired in earlier levels with new skills. He should now have the ability to decode just about any English word.

This final level teaches 15 new phonograms, including UI, OUGH, RH, and others. Dozens of interesting activities teach comprehension skills and fluency, with regular review incorporated, so nothing is forgotten.

The 29 integrated, fully-decodable stories in Level 4 include words so challenging that you may be startled to hear them roll fluently out of your child’s mouth!

All About Reading

All About Reading (AAR) is the multisensory, mastery-based program you’ve heard about. Suitable for all ages and with activities that benefit all learning styles, AAR teaches phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension in a fun and engaging way.

Moving at a gentler pace than other more intense reading programs, with AAR, only one new concept is taught at a time. Their precept-upon-precept program works with all kids, and AAR’s built-in review system helps the learning stick.

Based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach, 97% of English words can be learned according to phonetic rules, leaving only 3% as sight words. The progressive introduction of letters introduces vowels with consonants in a way that will allow your child to begin reading almost immediately. We particularly like how AAR integrates phonics instruction and phonics readers into a single comprehensive program, so they correlate directly with each other.

And you will be thrilled to know that no prior training is needed. AAR has lightly scripted and illustrated “open and go” lessons that make your job easy and stress-free.

Lessons are taught in short, manageable chunks. The author recommends students spend no more than 20 minutes a day learning to read, plus another 20 listening to a read-aloud.

The student activity books add variety to the lessons and provide additional support. The phonetic readers are the best we have ever seen – beautifully illustrated hardcover books with finely detailed full-color drawings. The complete AAR program consists of five levels, from PreK through third grade.

Our Level 4 Deluxe (with Tiles) Set:
The All About Reading Level 4 Deluxe kit is our recommended set. It is the All About Reading system containing all the components required for teaching Level 4 with letter tiles and magnets added. These physical letter tiles and magnets can take the place of the Letter Tiles app that we recommend for users of our app-dependent kit. For families who prefer a less technological, more tactile approach, the AAR Level 4 with Tiles Set may be the perfect choice. Find more information and comparisons below.
The All About Reading Level 4 Deluxe includes the Level 4 Teacher's Manual, Student Packet with Activity Book, two readers, the Reader Divider Cards, and the Reading Review Box, plus Letter Tiles, Magnets, and the supplementary Phonograms Sounds App. You may also want to add a magnetic whiteboard, which is recommended but not required.

Our Level 4 App-Dependent Set:
The All About Reading Level 4 App-Dependent Set contains all the essential books and review box required for teaching Level 4, but no Letter Tiles. Instead, your family will purchase the Letter Tiles app, available for tablets on various app stores. The Letter Tiles app is an innovative, phenomenally effective, and incredibly convenient way to implement hands-on learning and practice with All About Reading. Find more information and comparisons below.
The Level 4 App-Dependent Set includes the Level 4 Teacher's Manual, Student Packet with Activity Book, two readers, the Reader Divider Cards, and the Reading Review Box. You’ll also need to add the Letter Tiles app, available on iTunes, Google Play, and the Kindle app store.

App-Based vs. Magnetic Tiles
For our Timberdoodle curriculum kits, we’ve opted for the Deluxe Set that includes the Letter Tiles. This provides the hands-on aspect of real tiles, and equips you to teach with no requirement of access to a tablet or additional purchase of an app. However, since the Letter Tiles app allows for incredible ease of use and storage, if convenience is your top priority, the App-Dependent Kit may be the choice for you.

Here is a brief comparison of the two options:

With the physical letter tiles (Deluxe):
  • No tablet is required to complete the lessons
  • No additional purchase of an app is required
  • Larger tiles are easy to read
  • It's easy to incorporate hands-on alphabetizing practice
  • Tricky word parts can be highlighted with markers
  • Timeless, traditional, and tactile educational tool
  • No screen time!

  • With the Letter Tiles app (required for the App-Dependent Kit):
  • It is immediately prepared for any lesson, and automatically organizes itself
  • No more worries about lost letter tiles
  • No need for a whiteboard
  • It's easy to capitalize words
  • You can hear the sounds of the phonograms seamlessly as you teach
  • Lessons are easy to teach "on the go"
  • Need to switch between students? No problem! Simply select your current lesson in All About Reading and you're ready to begin.

What will my student learn in Level 4?
Your student will learn exciting new concepts, including words with multiple suffixes, fifteen new phonograms, and methods for decoding multisyllable words – and continue to establish a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning. Every component of reading is taught: decoding (phonics and structural analysis), vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Below is a sampling in each area.

  • Decoding (Phonics)
  • Learn phonograms EY, EAR, UI, IE, PH, GU, GN, AUGH, EI, OUGH, SI, MB, OUR, CI, and RH; and read words containing the new phonograms, such as honey, early, juice, field, phase, guest, gnat, daughter, beige, rough, mission, comb, journey, special, and rhyme.

  • Decoding (Structural Analysis)
  • Decode multisyllabic words; read words with multiple suffixes, as in thankfully; read words with a variety of suffixes, including -ible, -able, -ance, -ence, -sion, -ic, -al, -ous, -ist, -ism, -ity, -ize, -ary, and -ery; read words containing unaccented syllables, as in pirate, Alaska, and doctor; and read words with silent letters, as in half and comb.

  • Vocabulary
  • Discuss new words in the context of the story and one’s own life; explore varying dialects, regional language, and words containing influences from Greek, French, Spanish, and Italian, and understand homonyms, heteronyms, synonyms, antonyms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, idioms, personification, acronyms, and hyperbole.

  • Fluency
  • Read with accuracy, meaningful expression, and natural phrasing.

  • Comprehension
  • Connect text to one's own experiences, make predictions and inferences, compare and contrast main characters and stories, discuss main conflict and character transformation, skim for specific information, discuss shades of meaning, and summarize the text.

A Reading Program Your Kids Will Actually Enjoy

When we decided to pull our kids out of public school, my first grader was struggling to read. We started with All About Reading Level 2 and he flourished! He was easily decoding words and reading with confidence by the end of the year. We continued with Levels 2 & 3 with great success and he even advanced to Level 4 before his 3rd grade year. My son went from dreading reading to looking forward to his All About Reading lessons. The lessons are also simple to prep and easy to follow. We highly recommend this curriculum!

    An Excellent Conclusion

I used All About Reading to teach my kiddos to read - one with dyslexia and one without. I only ended up needing to use this fourth level with my dyslexic reader, but it was a delightful level to use. Adding in additional advanced phonics and words from other languages that frequently are used in English, this level helped launch her into independent, delighted free reading.

    I love this program!

I am so glad that I discovered AAR! I love the multi-faceted approach to help all types of learners get better with reading! The lessons are super easy to prepare for the day and the kiddos enjoy using the games, cards, or whatever that lesson has that day! Even helped my resistant reader! I will use this on all my homeschooled kiddos!

    Love This!

I love this series. I was so nervous at first to teach my two how to read and understand how to spell but this curriculum has seriously helped not only them learn, but also taught me a few things.

    Great Curriculum

We have used all previous levels of AAR and were unsure if we wanted to move on to Mosdos or stick with AAR 4. As a family we decided to do both and we are so glad we did. AAR 4 is providing a very nice understanding of words in the english language derived from other languages. It's also helped with reading comprehension and parts of a story. We would definitely recommend to others.
