Level 2:

All About Reading Level 2 picks up from where your student left off in Level 1, adding new skills systematically. Level 2 teaches 22 new phonograms or sounds, including EE, OY, OW, and others.

Many hands-on activities continue to make learning and review engaging for students, while the 27 integrated, decodable short stories with comprehension activities take Level 2 above and beyond.

From Fox’s stunts in the first chapter to the overenthusiastic work of Rawhide, the ranch dog, parents and children will enjoy the funny, wholesome stories and illustrations.

All About Reading

All About Reading (AAR) is the multisensory, mastery-based program you’ve heard about. Suitable for all ages and with activities that benefit all learning styles, AAR teaches phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension in a fun and engaging way.

Moving at a gentler pace than other more intense reading programs, with AAR, only one new concept is taught at a time. Their precept-upon-precept program works with all kids, and AAR’s built-in review system helps the learning stick.

Based on the Orton-Gillingham Approach, 97% of English words can be learned according to phonetic rules, leaving only 3% as sight words. The progressive introduction of letters introduces vowels with consonants in a way that will allow your child to begin reading almost immediately. We particularly like how AAR integrates phonics instruction and phonics readers into a single comprehensive program, so they correlate directly with each other.

And you will be thrilled to know that no prior training is needed. AAR has lightly scripted and illustrated “open and go” lessons that make your job easy and stress-free.

Lessons are taught in short, manageable chunks. The author recommends students spend no more than 20 minutes a day learning to read, plus another 20 listening to a read-aloud.

The student activity books add variety to the lessons and provide additional support. The phonetic readers are the best we have ever seen – beautifully-illustrated hardcover books with finely detailed full-color drawings. The complete AAR program consists of five levels, from PreK through third grade.

Our Level 2 Deluxe (with Tiles) Set:
The All About Reading Level 2 Deluxe kit is our recommended set. It is the All About Reading system containing all the components required for teaching Level 2 with letter tiles and magnets added. These physical letter tiles and magnets can take the place of the Letter Tiles app that we recommend for users of our app-dependent kit. For families who prefer a less technological, more tactile approach, the AAR Level 2 with Tiles Set may be the perfect choice. Find more information and comparisons below.
The All About Reading Level 2 Deluxe includes the Level 2 Teacher's Manual, Student Packet with Activity Book, two readers, the Reader Divider Cards, and the Reading Review Box, plus Letter Tiles, Magnets, and the supplementary Phonograms Sounds App. You may also want to add a magnetic whiteboard, which is recommended but not required.

Our Level 2 App-Dependent Set:
The All About Reading Level 2 App-Dependent Set contains all the essential books and review box required for teaching Level 2, but no Letter Tiles. Instead, your family will purchase the Letter Tiles app, available for tablets on various app stores. The Letter Tiles app is an innovative, phenomenally effective, and incredibly convenient way to implement hands-on learning and practice with All About Reading. Find more information and comparisons below.
The Level 2 App-Dependent Set includes the Level 2 Teacher's Manual, Student Packet with Activity Book, two readers, the Reader Divider Cards, and the Reading Review Box. You’ll also need to add the Letter Tiles app, available on iTunes, Google Play, and the Kindle app store.

App-Based vs. Magnetic Tiles
For our Timberdoodle curriculum kits, we’ve opted for the Deluxe Set that includes the Letter Tiles. This provides the hands-on aspect of real tiles, and equips you to teach with no requirement of access to a tablet or additional purchase of an app. However, since the Letter Tiles app allows for incredible ease of use and storage, if convenience is your top priority, the App-Dependent Kit may be the choice for you.

Here is a brief comparison of the two options:

With the physical letter tiles (Deluxe):
  • No tablet is required to complete the lessons
  • No additional purchase of an app is required
  • Larger tiles are easy to read
  • It's easy to incorporate hands-on alphabetizing practice
  • Tricky word parts can be highlighted with markers
  • Timeless, traditional, and tactile educational tool
  • No screen time!

  • With the Letter Tiles app (required for the App-Dependent Kit):
  • It is immediately prepared for any lesson, and automatically organizes itself
  • No more worries about lost letter tiles
  • No need for a whiteboard
  • It's easy to capitalize words
  • You can hear the sounds of the phonograms seamlessly as you teach
  • Lessons are easy to teach "on the go"
  • Need to switch between students? No problem! Simply select your current lesson in All About Reading and you're ready to begin.

What will my student learn in Level 2?
Your student will learn exciting new concepts, including three-letter blends, the jobs of Silent E, new phonograms, and methods for decoding multisyllable words – and continue to establish a firm foundation for a lifetime of learning. Every component of reading is taught: decoding (phonics and structural analysis), vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Below is a sampling in each area.

  • Decoding (Phonics)
  • Learn new phonograms WH, EE, ER, AR, OR, ED, OY, OI, AW, AU, OW, and OU to read words such as whale, sheep, herd, farm, horn, toy, boil, saw, haul, flower, and found; read words with long I or O before two consonants as in find and gold; read words with soft C or G as in race or gem, and learn the first four jobs of Silent E

  • Decoding (Structural Analysis)
  • Learn to identify base words, read contractions such as “they’ll”, learn syllable division rules for reading multisyllable words, and read words with past tense ending ed, as in wanted, snowed, and chipped

  • Vocabulary
  • Discuss new words in the context of the story and one’s own life, and understand homophones, synonyms, and antonyms.

  • Fluency
  • Read with accuracy, meaningful expression, and natural phrasing.

  • Comprehension
  • Connect text to one's own experiences, make predictions, identify the main character, compare and contrast main characters, discuss character motivation and main conflict, skim for specific information, and make inferences from the text.

Only reading program we will use!

This reading program has worked flawlessly with both of my older daughters, and it is the same program we will use for my youngest daughter when she’s ready. We’ve done levels 1 and 2 and are about to begin level 3 for the 2024/25 school year. This program utilizes an approach that feels like mastery, but there’s plenty of opportunities for you (the teacher) to throw in review. The method used is this program is the method recommended for children with many different learning disabilities, and it also works great for neurotypical readers alike. We have one daughter with dyslexia and ADHD and one neurotypical daughter. Both are moving through this program with NO tears or complaints. As the parent/teacher, I love the open and go style. The most prep I have to do is some cutting of paper- which I often do the day of right at the table during our lesson. I don’t feel like I need to read ahead at all, and I have yet to run into a lesson where I felt like I wished I prepared beforehand- in 2 years! I cannot recommend this enough.

    AAR is the best!

All three of my children have utilized AAR to learn to read. I could not love the program more! It is so easy to follow, is split up into manageable sections, and has many activities to reinforce concepts. The work of a true genius.

    I love this curriculum

I love that this curriculum is a middle ground. I've seen reading programs that dont have a lot of repetitive work to cement the ideas and ive seen some that are like drinking from a fire hose. This program is a happy medium and has really helped my struggling reader.

    Great customer service

I bought this and other products from Timberdoodle through a Texas program using ClassWallet. I was unsure of the process and the people at Timberdoodle were so helpful and responsive. I love All Bout Reading and All About Spelling for my dyslexic kiddo and my struggling reader. The experience with Timberdoodle made it even better.
