Science in the Ancient World

Science in the Ancient World covers the work of natural philosophers who lived from about 600 BC to the early 1500s AD. With Science in the Ancient World, your student will;

  • Use candy to demonstrate what Democritus got wrong about atoms
  • Find out why Hippocrates thought wine should be sprinkled on bandages
  • Speculate why Leonardo da Vinci used mirror writing in all of his notebooks.

Science in the Ancient World concentrates primarily on what these ancient scientists got right. But there is also discussion concerning what they got wrong because even mistakes can advance our understanding of the natural world.

Students will also learn that most of the great scientists in the last half of this period were devout Christians. They investigated science to learn more about God by studying His handiwork.

The Science in the Ancient World Set includes the text and the slim Helps & Hints book. Helps & Hints for Science in the Ancient World contains answers for the review exercises in the text and hints to make checking, correcting, and explaining the students' work easier.

And while the author suggests that testing is unnecessary for most families, he includes tests and test solutions for families who find it beneficial. See our optional lab kit here.

Berean Science

Berean Science offers students an opportunity to study science through the lens of history. Berean Science teaches science chronologically using a narrative dialogue and a Christian worldview, so each volume has vast and varied science topics.

The hardcover textbooks have lots of full-color illustrations. The lesson is concise but complete, distilling down to the core of what your child needs to know.

Lesson material is often just a page or two following each activity, perfect for any child that struggles to sit and pay attention.

Fairly bursting with experiments, Berean Science's strong focus on this hands-on component makes it an ideal program for the wigglers in your household. Every lesson has an activity of some sort! Activities, all color-coded and easy to find quickly, often involve inexpensive household items and are the gateway to the exploration of each scientific concept.

Berean Science lends itself well to multi-grade homes that prefer to use just one science curriculum for the entire family. Each lesson concludes with questions or additional activities for "younger," "older," and "oldest" students. Lessons are taught directly from the text, so parents and students share the same book. Sprinkled throughout the text are optional "challenge" lessons that you are free to skip if time is an issue.

Each book has a helpful section in the front that tells you all the materials you will need, broken down per chapter, for doing the experiments. We offer a lab kit if you would like a convenient, time-saving way to get nearly all of the materials you need for the experiments! This lab kit is assembled with virtually every non-household item the curriculum requires, so you won't have to search for elusive components. Berean Science is an excellent way to teach science and a welcomed addition to the Timberdoodle kits

Outstanding Textbook for Elementary

I'm using this with my science-loving 5-year-old second grader. At first I was worried this was a bit over her head, but she is understanding so much more than I would have expected and asking the most interesting questions. It's a very easy textbook to summarize when needed and having activities for every lesson is wonderful. No, we don't do every single one, but it's very easy to pick and choose which ones to do. Most every experiment / activity we have come across has been relatively easy for me to set up and fun for my daughter. I also love the fact that it is ordered chronologically. I don't think I've ever seen another science textbook do this. I think the progression is very logical. I highly recommend!

takes a little planning

I bought the supply box last year and found that i was still missing a lot of things. most of the experiments require extra things you may or may not have around the house, but in the end its a great book and worth the extra planning.

The Best Science Ever!

When we first started homeschooling I had this dream of being that homeschool mom that did all these cool science experiments and getting the kids involved in the process a lot. I was never really able to do that... Until now! This book makes science so easy to set up, easy to understand, and makes a huge impact. Not only has this curriculum been a dream come true for myself, but both my kids love it and beg me to do more daily. On top of that it is great at discussing the Bible while doing it. This is an absolute must have for any homeschool classroom (or dinning room table 😉).

Great way to do science

We love this science curriculum. It’s nice not worrying about what they are being taught in public school and being able to incorporate religion into science. Great book with lots of fun experiments and even I’ve learned from it so that’s a plus.
