The Mystery of History: Volume I
The Mystery of History: Vol I, 3rd Edition is all your family will need to teach history from ancient civilizations to the time of Christ. What appeals to us most about this program is its worldwide approach to history. Your family will learn that Rome was established less than ten years after Jonah's trial in a fish. The last book of the Old Testament was written at about the time of Alexander the Great. And that the Great Wall of China was built 200 years before the birth of Christ.

Combines Biblical & Secular History
As they read the Bible, Christians tend to forget that other civilizations were warring, struggling, and searching for truth. Therefore, this history program is written with combined Biblical and secular history. While decidedly Christian in bent, other cultures and faiths are presented with deference.  The Mystery of History: Vol I is written in a conversational style for elementary through high school students. But it can also be used as a read-aloud with younger children.

Multi-Age Activities
Not just a textbook, Volume I includes a digital (as a download code) Companion Guide. This Companion Guide is brimming with multi-age activities, hands-on activities, and research projects for younger, middle, and older students. It also includes memory card ideas, bi-weekly quizzes, exercises, timeline helps; maps; supplemental book lists, etc. This option is particularly beneficial for families with younger students in elementary and middle grades. A print Companion Guide is also available separately for your family's convenience.

108 Lessons
The Mystery of History was designed with a thirty-six-week school year in mind. Each week includes a pretest, three lessons, a review, and an exercise or quiz. Written for 4th- to 5th-grade reading level for independent reading. However, as a read-aloud, family study, or classroom program, The Mystery of History can accommodate grades 1-12. Is your family ready to study history in an in-depth, Bible-centered, chronological fashion? Then The Mystery of History is for you.

From the Publisher:
Volume I, in the words of the author:

In Volume I of The Mystery of History, I cover world history from Creation to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The text spans the incredible stories of ancient times, ancient lands, and ancient peoples. Where most ancient studies encompass only Egypt, Greece, and Rome, The Mystery of History goes much farther.

In Volume I, I include chronologically based stories from all around the world, including Asia, North America, and the Holy Lands. Beginning with the Garden of Eden, stories will spread from Sumer and Babel to Troy, Phoenicia, and Assyria. The study of early civilizations will include King Wu of China and Asoka of India as well as King David, Julius Caesar, and Xerxes of Persia. Above all, a favorite feature of Volume I is the weaving of Bible history with world history. In reality, it is all world history. But for most of us, history has not been taught this way. It has not been integrated.

In The Mystery of History, I have retold major stories from the Bible in the order that they happened alongside significant world history events and figures. As an example, Bible characters and world history figures living just decades apart include:

  • Joshua and King Tut
  • Daniel and Aesop
  • Ezekiel and Buddha
  • Nehemiah and Socrates
  • and Cleopatra and Herod the Great.

  • Imagine lining up such amazing figures on one master timeline! Imagine learning their stories back to back in the order they happened! For most of us, it’s an illuminating experience.

Upgraded to a colorful hardback Student Reader, the Third Edition comes with a digital version of the Companion Guide through a one-time download code. (It’s inside the front cover. For those that prefer paper, a printed version of the Companion Guide is available as a separate purchase.) The Companion Guide is loaded with pretests, multi-age activities, timeline directions, mapping exercises, quizzes, reading lists, and more for an adjustable and enriching experience – no matter your method of education.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, Mystery of History

My 7th grader and I have enjoyed this subject. We printed out the student handbook and put it in a binder. I love that this is bible based and ties biblical history with world history. We will definitely do this again next year.

Maybe we would have enjoyed a different approach

I think our daughter would have liked the book more if there were activities to do. We will be using a non-religious based approach for history next year. I think it left some details out because it was staying in the religious aspect.

    Well written and Enjoyable

First off this curriculum is written with a Biblical world view. If that is not what you are looking for check out Story of the World. My kids and I started with this History Curriculum and we were hooked and completed books 1-4. She starts with creation, gives you a new look into People who lived during Biblical times, including many not mentioned in in the traditional Sunday School Stories. The last Chapter is my favorite ending with the Resurrection and a beautiful alter call. It is easy to picture Secular figures living alongside those we are familiar with in the Bible. Susan is very engaging in her writing and is enjoyable to listen to in the audio version. A must have for students such as my son with Dyslexia. The format is easy to adjust for multiple grade levels. All if my kids grades PK-7th get something out of the lessons. We have worked thru this curriculum several times.
