Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 5

Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 5 Student Textbook has 22 chapters. It gives students an in-depth look at the atomic model and periodic table, chemical bonding, how to define living organisms, biological cells, viruses, bacteria, force, energy, and work, plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes, Earth's layers, the Moon and the Sun, terrestrial and Jovian planets, and much more.

Students begin the open inquiry with suggested questions found in the Teacher's Manual, which also has directions for guiding the experiments. The Laboratory Notebook contains 22 experiments that explore topics covered in the Student Text

Experiments include

Modeling molecules

Identifying chemical reactions

Observing the effects of enzymes on starch

Preparing agar plates and testing for bacteria

Testing minerals, modeling plate tectonics

Observing constellations, modeling lunar and solar eclipses, and much more.

Each book has 4 chapters of the 5 core science subjects (chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy) and an introductory and a concluding chapter for 22 chapters. If you would like a convenient, time-saving way to get nearly all of the materials you will need for the experiments, we now offer a lab kit! This lab kit is assembled with virtually every non-household item the curriculum requires, so you won't have to search for elusive components.

About Real Science-4-Kids Building Blocks of Science

Kids ask real science questions. Building Blocks of Science enables them to discover real science answers. Because science disciplines are so interlaced, learning one subject requires a foundational understanding of another. Building Blocks of Science addresses this by introducing students to the five core scientific disciplines of chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy.

With Building Blocks of Science, students learn science in a sequential and logical order, beginning with fundamental building blocks of science and expanding on these as they advance in grade level. Hands-on experiments for each chapter encourage critical thinking, experimentation, and creativity.

Exploring the Building Blocks of Science is a year-long program for grades 1-7, covering all five core disciplines. It's based on a spiral teaching method where subjects are repeatedly visited and built upon over months and across grades. This has proven to lead to better long-term mastery of facts and concepts.

Building Blocks of Science is written to accommodate both secular and Christian homeschoolers. The publisher, Real Science-4-Kids, has received several awards, including the Practical Homeschooling Reader Awards. The study bundles contain a student textbook, teacher's manual, laboratory notebook, printable lesson plans, quizzes, and a study notebook. See our optional lab kit here.

I'll preface this with saying we decided to end up using this as just a reading book that we discuss. I do like the book as a reader but not as a complete science program. Not sure I would buy the entire program to just use the book, and the option to buy just the text is quite expensive, but we did enjoy the text.

Textbook is Fantastic! Lab book is VERY writing Intense.

Text book is entertaining to read and has really fun cartoons. I like how it also covers the history of science to keep my history kiddo involved. However, the labs are super writing intense even for my 5th graders (though I got the text for my reading and science advanced 3rd grader). Moving forward I would probably only get one lab book and let them take turns filling out questions as well as alternating with some Notebooking assignments.

    Great Science Program

All three of my kids are using this program. It's easy to follow and sparks great conversations. The experiments are a bit more writing heavy than they are in the lower levels, however, that makes sense for an older kid. It's a great way to tie in other skills!

    Unimpressed

My daughter was pretty excited when we got the program, but once we started doing it the excitement left. She didn't like all of the writing that was involved and there wasn't enough clear direction for her. She is my little scientist and loves to learn the what's and why's and complexities of things, but there just wasn't enough of that for her. She found it very frustrating. I have no doubt that this program is going to be great for kids; it just wasn't the right fit for mine.

    Building Blocks of Science 5

We personally enjoyed the 4th grade science books better. She doesn't like all the writing this on requires. She wants more of the other books the subject had.
