Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 2 Student Textbook has 22 chapters. It introduces students to the essential tools used in chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, and geology. 

 

Students learn about the microscope, how hammers and lenses are used to study rocks and minerals, and how telescopes and spacecraft help astronomers study the universe. Students also explore acids and bases, chemical reactions, protists, fungi, forces, mass, inertia, linear and curved motion, the geosphere and atmosphere, constellations, the solar system, stars, and more.

 

Students begin the open inquiry with suggested questions found in the Teacher's Manual, which contains directions for guiding the experiments. The Laboratory Notebook includes 22 experiments that explore topics covered in the Student Text. Some experiments include: testing acids and bases, observing protists with a microscope, exploring linear and curved motion, using hammers for geology, modeling Earth's layers, building a telescope, tracking constellations, and much more. 

 

The books have 4 chapters of each of the 5 core science subjects (chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and astronomy) and an introductory and a concluding chapter for 22 chapters. We offer a lab kit if you would like a convenient, time-saving way to get nearly all of the materials you will need for the experiments! This lab kit is already assembled with virtually every non-household item the curriculum requires, so you won't have to search for elusive components.

    They make it Easy

    The layout of this curriculum makes science easy and fun. I can break it up to go into more detail or we can push through and get a whole section done in a sitting. It all depends on what my kiddos needs and how much they can handle. I just love the flexibility so it works for all my kiddos and beyond.

    Don’t forget to buy a microscope

    So this was my first year going with this science curriculum. There were some things I did and didn’t like. I liked that the book was sturdy and had a separate student work book. The information was great, but the drawings were kind of low quality. I didn’t realize when i bought the book that I needed a microscope. There were many experiments that needed a microscope for them so we unfortunately couldn’t do them. Instead we would read the lesson and then watch youtube videos of microscopic creatures that matched the lesson. The book seems a little advanced for the age level, but the information was short and sweet and to the point.

    Science is my sons favorite subject but I wasn't very into science in school. Even I love learning science now while I'm teaching my son about it. He loves the labs as well

    Instructions to the teacher unclear

    We ended up stopping this program around mid-year. There were things I liked and things I didn't. In the end, it just didn't work out for us. We supplemented with various science lessons from other places and next year I will hope to use a program that will last the year. These are my pros/cons:
    Pros:
    -The student lab book and Teacher book go well together. And the student book has a lot of space for writing thoughts and/or drawing what is observed.
    -There's a lab kit that goes along with this you can buy that can give you most of the things you need. However, not everything.
    Cons:
    -There's a textbook that I have no idea what to do with. There's no instruction for it, and the textbook order doesn't really follow along with the lab book and teacher book. We started just reading it and it seemed boring and advanced for my student. Also, again, I didn't know what it had to do with the rest of the books. It just didn't make sense. There needs to be more instruction to the teachers on HOW to teach this. Unless I'm missing something...
    -There's a ton of random extra things to download and print off. While this is a great idea to have extras to enrich the lessons, it didn't really explain everything. It also was a LOT to print. Tons of ink wasted because we didn't even use any part of the printed stuff. It would have been nice to have an explanation of what it is exactly and HOW to use it.

    This wasn't the worse science program we've had, but I thought it could have been better. Some parts were fun and interesting while others were a real snooze. I also didn't like all the additional things you need to acquire to do the experiments. I wish I knew I needed a microscope before purchasing the program.
