The Fallacy Detective

The Fallacy Detective is an introductory course on identifying fallacies and misleading notions that flood our public discourse. Studying fallacies is the most practical segment in the study of logic.

The Fallacy Detective covers logical fallacies and propaganda techniques and explains how to spot each. The practice and terminology will lay an excellent foundation for all other logic studies. Fun to use, The Fallacy Detective even includes occasional Peanuts, Dilbert, and Calvin and Hobbes cartoons. Plus, your students will learn skills they can apply right away. By using short chapters, clear examples, a touch of humor, and interesting exercises, even reluctant scholars will enjoy learning how to identify fallacies. A complete answer key is included at the back of the book.

Abundantly easy to use and engaging to boot, The Fallacy Detective was a beloved read-aloud for our family. We enjoyed some friendly competition as we raced to answer the questions orally. Although the authors recommend this book for older children, Pearl was eight when we read it, and we did not feel any of the topics were inappropriate – heartbreaking perhaps, but not improper. Your family may differ, so we urge you to stay one chapter ahead if you use this book with younger children. The Fallacy Detective presents examples such as abortion and politics from a conservative perspective yet in a nonreligious fashion.

Mom enjoyed, 6th graders on the fence

I've enjoyed working this workbook with both of my 6th graders. Neither of them are really excited about this particular workbook, but don't mind if we all work together to finish the lessons. I have encouraged them to take notes so that they don't have to keep going back to find the appropriate answers to the questions.

This book is so much Fun!! It teaches reasoning and how to look for errors in logic. The lessons are short, the comics are fun and the exercises drive the lesson home. It's a favorite in our house!

Excellent for critical thinking!

This book is excellent at teaching critical thinking skills to middle school and high school kids. We purchased this for my 13 year old son, and it really challenges him to think through different scenarios. This book has been a highlight in our homeschool!

Fifth child working through

I have used the first edition of this with my first four children. They thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I'm working through this improved workbook edition with my fifth child of 12 years. She really enjoys it. It is one of the highlights of the week. I can see her logical thinking improving. My other two children come running to hear us discuss it, even though they aren't required to be there.

Excellent

Perfect book for my middle schooler. He likes to argue and debate, and this book helps him to make his point clear and logically based.
