Our brains and our hearts are wired for stories. Intro to Filmmaking allows your student to explore storytelling creatively through the universally appealing medium – film. Intro to Filmmaking is a fantastic online film curriculum for preteens and teens. The course includes an Intro to Filmmaking spiral-bound worktext with 18 in-depth lessons and projects. After each lecture, students are given an appropriate assignment that can be completed by either individuals or co-op groups.

Family-friendly movies (not included but readily available) and a critical evaluation of them are integral in this course. All of these lessons are building up to creating your student’s own short film. That final film will be submitted for professional review and entered into a film festival complete with prizes! Best Class Ever!

I am halfway through this class and it is so AMAZING! I am a kid who does alot of musical theater but have never given much thought to film. I cannot believe how much I have learned in a semester. I have analyzed amazing movies, learned about shooting angles, lighting, sound, parts of a story (called acts) and so much more. Damon Evans is a fabulous instructor and the other students are funny and interesting. I love this so much that I asked my parents if I can do the advanced class after I finish this one. I am getting so close to getting to start filming the short film. I should note that you do have some equipment you will need to get. It isn't too expensive but you will need a way to achieve good lighting and sound. You will learn a cheap method how to do that using your iPhone and various other ways.

This was a fabulous curriculum pick!

We have only been doing this course for about a month but so far my daughter adores it. She is almost 12yo and is a child who has done musical theater for 6 years so it is in her genral wheelhouse. The lessons are fun and fascinating, the movies chosen to analyze are family friendly classics and she (and I!) are learning alot. The course covers movie analysis, the ins and outs of film making as well as historical fun facts. At the end of the course the student or students is given a script and they will use what has been learned to make a short film. Customer service is also VERY good! I had to ask a few questions early on and I was surprised at how quickly my question was followed up on. The notebook provides just the right level of written work to retain and think about what is being learned. Assignments are fun. For example, my daughter is currently taking 20 photos that she has to put into a slide show based on a story topic given to her. Her goal is to story board in a way that I will be able to understand her story without her giving me any narration about it. Cool right!? :) So fabulous!
