Science in the Beginning

The Berean Science series teaches science as discovered throughout history, so it makes perfect sense for the series to open right at the beginning with the six days of creation.

Science, in the Beginning, provides 15 lessons for each of the six days of creation, incorporating a wide variety of topics and experiments.

These include

  • Light and eyesight in Unit 1
  • Tornadoes in Unit 2
  • A crayon rock cycle in Unit 3
  • A toilet paper map of the solar system in Unit 4
  • Whether saltwater or freshwater fish drink more in Unit 5
  • And how cats, dogs, and rabbits see differently in Unit 6.

Throughout, students are referred back to the Creator who fashioned all the marvels they are studying.

The Science in the Beginning Set includes the text and the slim Helps & Hints book. Helps & Hints for Science, in the Beginning, contains answers for the review exercises in the text and hints to make checking, correcting, and explaining the students' work easier.

And while the author suggests that testing is unnecessary for most families, he includes tests and test solutions for families who find it beneficial. See our optional lab kit here.

About Berean Science

Berean Science offers students an opportunity to study science through the lens of history. Berean Science teaches science chronologically using a narrative dialogue and a Christian worldview, so there are vast and varied science topics in each volume.

The hardcover textbooks have lots of full-color illustrations. The lesson is concise but complete, distilling down to the core of what your child needs to know.

Lesson material is often just a page or two following each activity, perfect for any child that struggles to sit and pay attention.

Fairly bursting with experiments, Berean Science's strong focus on this hands-on component makes it an ideal program for the wigglers in your household. Every lesson has an activity of some sort! Activities, all color-coded and easy to find quickly, often involve inexpensive household items and are the gateway to the exploration of each scientific concept.

Berean Science lends itself well to multi-grade homes that prefer to use just one science curriculum for the entire family. Each lesson concludes with questions or additional activities for "younger," "older," and "oldest" students. Lessons are taught directly from the text, so parents and students share the same book. Sprinkled throughout the text are optional "challenge" lessons that you are free to skip if time is an issue.

Each book has a helpful section in the front that tells you all the materials you will need, broken down per chapter, for doing the experiments. We offer a lab kit if you would like a convenient, time-saving way to get nearly all of the materials you will need for the experiments! This lab kit is already assembled with virtually every non-household item the curriculum requires, so you won't have to search for elusive components. Berean Science is an excellent way to teach science and a welcomed addition to the Timberdoodle kits

”This curriculum is very experiment heavy and the kids absolutely love this. The kids are so excited to do their science program every week and I cannot tell you how excited that makes me!”

Best Science Ever!!!

When we first started homeschooling I had this dream of being that homeschool mom that did all these cool science experiments and getting the kids involved in the process a lot. I was never really able to do that... Until now! This book makes science so easy to set up, easy to understand, and makes a huge impact. Not only has this curriculum been a dream come true for myself, but both my kids love it and beg me to do more daily. On top of that it is great at discussing the Bible while doing it. This is an absolute must have for any homeschool classroom (or dinning room table 😉).

Too Advanced For First Grade

We have decided to stop using this book. My first grader is not enjoying it at all and science has become a chore for him. We are just about done with the first day of creation, and while I do appreciate it, my son has had enough of learning about light. He told me he wants to learn fun and interesting things, and learning about light and how it travels, bends, reflects, etc is just not interesting for him. I’ve had to re read things multiple times for him to get it. To be honest, I find myself being bored too

Anna,
Thank you for sharing your experience with Berean Science with us all; we appreciate it! We do encourage families, as they are able, to take advantage of the plethora of experiments for younger children. These experiments are strategically placed to help demonstrate the concept and keep your children engaged. But if your child is still overwhelmed by the text, you can major in the experiments and summarize the lessons. One approach could be to teach from the study questions at the end. So, look at the questions for the younger student and read the sections in the text that pertain to those questions. This way, your child will benefit from the age-appropriate highlights while also experiencing science by completing the hands-on portions. Or set it aside for a couple of months, and you may find that he can understand more when you pick it back up again.

Hope-- for the Timberdoodle Team

good for older students

This is great but for some reason, it's a lot for my littles to comprehend and there's a lot of going back and reading it. My 2nd and 3rd grader don't have a problem with this. I bought them the Evan and moore science workbook for them to do and we use science in the beginning here and there throughout the year.

Not for 1st grade

As a science teacher, I do admire this curriculum's rigor and hands on projects/activities. If I was in first grade, this would have been perfect for me and would have helped me greatly in my science career - I would have sponged all the facts up. However, I deeply question using this curriculum in first or second grade for non-science fanatic children. Why? Well, because the book covers all 7 days of creation and that premise forces them to cover all the science fields and practically the entire universe from the start to end of the book. That premise makes the book too exhaustive and too rigorous especially for first and second graders who are just trying to master writing, reading, and basic math. My kid excels in reading, but struggles in the other two so we have to do a lot of supplemental curriculum and activities. We just do not have time for a rigorous science curriculum with 3 experiment set ups a week. Yes some of the experiments are as easy as shine a flashlight in a mirror (so not all of them have a huge prep time), but if you want to finish this entire book, you need to do 3 lessons a week with those experiments/activities. Even as a science teacher, I was intimidated. Lastly, the book is not written in a fun engaging way. Its pretty bland which science focused kids will eat up, but those who are more ADD might get lost. I will most likely use this book in 3rd grade instead. I am going to pick up some Good & Beautiful units on Birds, Mammals, Geology, Arthropods, Ecology, etc. to use for 1st and 2nd grade. That is going to be a better fit for us for 1st and 2nd.

A lot of reading for a 6 year old

We received this in our 1st grade curriculum and tried it a couple of times. I do love the content but I feel it’s a lot for my 6 old to sit and listen and grasp. We tried some experiments and although they are fun I think we will put this aside until next year so she can better appreciate the reading portion along with the experiments.
